RED CROSS RECEIVES GENEROUS DONATION FROM
    STATE FARM INSURANCE

Santa Rosa, CA – Red Cross officials announced today that State Farm Insurance has donated $30,000 for disaster preparedness and recovery. The grant will be presented on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. the Red Cross office in Santa Rosa. The funds will help support disaster preparation and outreach throughout the six-county region of Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake, Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.

Northwestern California, ranging from Napa and Sonoma Counties to the Oregon border, has hundreds of miles of coastline and rural roads, countless bridges and rivers, numerous major fault lines and many communities that can be isolated instantly in a disaster. The region faces high probability of disaster with a large array of potential life-threatening and precarious issues following a flood, fire, earthquake or tsunami.

“State Farm has been a generous long-term supporter of the Red Cross. We are grateful to them for helping our community to be better supplied and prepared in case of an earthquake, flood or fire,” said Red Cross Regional CEO Tim Miller.

The State Farm grant will allow for the American Red Cross to ready countless more people in the event of a catastrophic disaster. The grant will also support supplies for readiness to help people respond to disasters in their community quickly and efficiently. A portion of the donation will also support year-round direct disaster response and intermediate and advanced disaster response training throughout Northwestern California.

“The Red Cross has a crucial role in community preparedness and disaster response. It is gratifying to work for a company that has a clear understanding about the importance of investing in the safety of our local communities,” said Mark Coleman, Napa State Farm Agent and member of the Red Cross Board of Directors serving the Napa County Chapter

    PRESS RELEASE
Napa County Chapter Red Cross Responds to Fire Victims

Napa, Wednesday, December 21, 2011 — With the smell of smoke still heavy in the air, a representative of the Napa County Chapter of the American Red Cross provided a debit card to the fire victims of the December 20th for immediate needs and also delivered four large bags of clothing provided by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

This was the second assistance to fire victims provided by the Napa County Red Cross Chapter in a little over a week. Help was also provided to the fire victims of the December 8 fire in Napa.

Nationally the Red Cross responds, on the average, to about 180 home fires every day, all year long. More than 93 percent of the 74,000 disasters the Red Cross responds to each year are fire related.

Unlike many disasters, home fires can and do affect anyone regardless of background, geography, or economic level.

Historically there is an upturn in structure fires during the winter months.

Following are points to always keep in mind and a Fire Prevention and Safety Checklist from the American Red Cross:

Stay Safe from Fire– Be Red Cross Ready

The most effective way to protect yourself and your home from fire is to identify and remove fire hazards. If a fire occurs in your home, get out, stay out and call 911 for help. Remember that working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan that has been practiced regularly can save lives.

    Fire Prevention & Safety Checklist:

    • Never smoke in bed.
    • Keep flammable items at least three feet from heat sources.
    • Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food.
    • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and check batteries once a month.
    • Ensure that all members of your home know two ways to escape from every room in case of fire.
    • Pick a place for everyone to meet outside in case of fire.
    • Practice your fire escape plan several times a year.
    • In case of fire, follow your plan. If smoke or flames block your escape, stay in the room with the doors closed. Place a wet towel under the door and call 911.
    • Use portable fire extinguishers ONLY if you have been trained by the fire department.

Napa County Red Cross Volunteer Reports Back on
    Work In Northeast Flooding Area

Monday, September 12, 2011 – On Thursday September 8th, I received a message from our Nations Disaster Headquarters that Michael Umble was activated to go and work with the disaster shelters in New Jersey.

Our Napa County Red Cross volunteers keep us informed of their availability throughout the year to be deployed anywhere in the country for a major disaster. I called Michael and asked him if he could leave the next day. His response was “if they need me I will go”.

The next morning Michael was in the office when we opened to fill out required paper work, get his pre-deployment briefing and by 1PM he was on a plane headed for New Jersey, where he landed shortly before midnight.

On Friday evening I sent him an email asking that he sends a couple of paragraphs when he could describing his experiences. I knew that he was in a disaster area and would be working 12 hour shifts but I was hoping that he would have some time to send us information so we could share what these amazing people actually do for the Red Cross during disasters.

    Hi Frank,
The trip out was uneventful, which is good, got in late and hit a few snags with rental car and hotel – not exactly close to the airport, about an hour away, but got me. Close to the chapter. Settled in about 3 am.

I can probably send email updates occasionally – personal emails are a challenge here because of weak Internet but I’ll send updates when I can.

I hit the ground running on Saturday morning. What a lot of people may not realize is with the one-two punch from Hurricane Irene the Lee there are about 14,000 homes affected, either destroyed or uninhabitable. The shelter I visited on day one was just a few blocks from the flooded area and very active, lots of people. Emotions ran high and were

understandably mixed. Some people had initially been evacuated, allowed to return home, then evacuated again when the floods returned. The gratitude shown towed the Red Cross staff was clearly evident. In a difficult situation the volunteers and staff were helping to provide a real home with a sense of community until it is safe to return to their own neighborhood.

It is for me as it is for them, one day at a time but it’s good to see the level of cooperation working get back to life as usual.

I’ll send more as time allows.

    Michael

    Iphone… Autocorrect…. (sorry)

The American Red Cross response to the flooding in the east and fires in the south has been amazing. More than 8,000 Red Cross volunteer workers like Michael Umble have served more than 1.9 million meals and snacks, handed out more than 217,000 relief items like hygiene kits, mops, brooms, tarps, work gloves and coolers, provided more than 28,000 mental health and health services consultations, and operated 50 shelters housing 2,900 people left homeless by these disasters.

Our response to multiple disasters across many states will cost millions. Costs for Hurricane Irene alone are estimated at between $10 million and $15 million. New relief efforts for flooding in Pennsylvania and New York, and the large wildfire response in Texas will add to that estimate. If you can help, we encourage you to click, text or call to donate to American Red Cross Disaster Relief.

To make a donation visit www.redcross.org , call 1-800-RED CROSS or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Contributions may also be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.

The American Red Cross is not a government agency. We rely on donations from the public to provide our disaster services.

Napa Chapter of the American Red Cross Fills Short-term Needs of Low Income and Underinsured with Medical Equipment Lending Program

With the recession as well as the restructuring of insurance coverage and public assistance, many individuals who find themselves needing wheelchairs, walkers, or even canes, are facing the challenges of finding alternative ways of filling those needs.

As a service to those who are dealing with such difficulties, the Napa Chapter of the American Red Cross offers a medical hardware lending library.

Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and commodes, as well as crutches and other medical hardware devices, are available to be borrowed for up to three months, free of charge.

The supplies ebb and flow with the needs of the community. Currently the needs, due to the current economy, are high and the supply shed is emptying out.

Most of the equipment which the Napa Red Cross is lending has been donated by family members who have lost family members or friends, but wanted to provide support for others who find themselves needing the equipment.

Medical hardware equipment which is needed by the Napa Red Cross to help fill the gap includes:

    • Adjustable canes
    • Bath benches
    • Bedside commodes
    • Bed rails
    • Canes
    • Front wheel walkers with 5” wheels
    • Grabber tool
    • Hemi walkers
    • Transfer boards
    • Transport chairs – light weight
    • Quad-canes
    • Standing pole
    • Wheel chairs (with footrests) – light and regular weight
By necessity, all donated medical equipment must be in good working condition.

Before donating, please call the Napa Chapter of the Red Cross for more information at 707-257-2900. Information is also available on the web page at napacountyredcross.org

  • A Rey of Hope

    Dear Editor:

I just lost my dad to Parkinsons disease. Because of the love and care he received from the employees of the Veterans Home in Yountville his last years and final days were filled with happiness and dignity. All the money in the world couldn’t have purchased health care equivalent to that provided my dad at the Veterans Home.

Budget cuts are rampant in our state and the Veteran’s Home has not been immune. Regardless of their personal issues (pay cuts, furlough days, etc.) the staff remains devoted and responsive not only to their residents but also to the families who entrust their loved ones to them.

My father experienced dementia, sometimes extreme due to the Parkinson’s and the medication utilized to control his physical symptoms. Some people in my situation must keep their loved one at home due to financial issues. This too would have been my case except for the fact that my dad served his country and as such qualified to live at the Veteran’s Home.

In a world that is so ridden with bad news, dishonest people, and dire circumstances I thought it would be nice for people to know that there are still very good people in the world who are willing to work astonishingly hard under difficult circumstances for little compensation. They don’t just show up to work and do their eight hours, they perform with kindness and a smile, creating an environment of dignity and belonging where there easily could be none. We are lucky enough to call these people our neighbors.

I want to thank the Veteran’s Home Memory Care staff at Roosevelt Annex I for being the wonderful people that you are. From Dr. Rettenmaier to the staff nurses, aids, therapists and ancillary services, I have never seen such team work and love of service under one roof that I witnessed over the past several years.

    ELECTION ENDORSEMENTS
    NAPA COUNTY TAXPAYERS ASSOCIATION

The NCTA was founded in 1962 and was reactivated this year in response to ongoing governmental deficit spending and tax increases. Our goal is to educate the public about taxes and governmental use of taxpayer dollars.

On behalf of the Associations Membership, we pleased to announce the following Endorsements for November 2, 2010 Election:

    BALLOT PROPOSTIONS:

Proposition 19; Legalizes Marijuana Under California but not Federal Law
    Recommendation: Vote NO
Legalization would likely bring with it additional substance abuse and the long-term public costs associated with that could vastly exceed the amount of new revenue legalized marijuana might bring in.

Proposition 20 Redistricting of Congressional Districts.
    Recommendation: Vote YES
Politicians do not get to choose their voters by establishing their districts.

Proposition 21; Establishes $18 Annual Vehicle License Surcharge to Help Fund State Parks and Wildlife Programs
    Recommendation: Vote NO
This piecemeal approach to budgeting via the ballot box is not the way to set priorities in a state with a myriad of pressing needs.

Proposition 22; Local Taxpayer, Public Safety and Transportation Protection Act
    Recommendation: Vote YES
Will ensure that funds approved by the voters for local government purposes go to local governments as intended and are not diverted to meet State obligations.

Proposition 23; The California Jobs Initiative suspends State law that requires greenhouse gas emissions be reduced to 1990 levels by 2020, until California's unemployment drops to 5.5 percent or less for four consecutive quarters.
    Recommendation; Vote YES
It will also prevent tax increases, as well as higher energy, transportation, fuel and food costs in California.

Proposition 24; This proposition would repeal recent changes in the tax code that were designed to ease the tax burden on California businesses.
    Recommendation: Vote NO
Would hurt small businesses, tax job creation and send more jobs OUT of California. Heavily taxed California businesses can't afford 24's new taxes.

Proposition 25; 'Changes Legislative Vote Requirement to Pass a Budget from Two-Thirds to a Simple Majority. Retains Two-Thirds Vote Requirement for Taxes.'
    Recommendation: Vote NO
The very real problem in California of vast increases in spending by a bankrupt state. This would make it easer to continue this process.

Proposition 26; Requires 2/3 vote for increasing fees
    Recommendation: Vote YES
State and local politicians have been using a loophole in the law to raise taxes by disguising them as “fees”.

    Proposition 27; Eliminates Redistricting Commission
    Recommendation: Vote NO
Allows elected representatives to pick their voters by establishing their congressional districts.

The Napa Zinfandel Trail, a new association of Napa Valley wineries that specialize in the production of wine from California’s historic grape variety, is announcing its premiere and the debut of its website www.napazintrail.com.

Historically, Zinfandel was one of the primary red grapes prized by early Napa Valley winemakers and today comprises just over 2% of the valley’s overall wine production. The Napa Zinfandel Trail wineries focus on producing world class red wines from this variety that is known for its characteristic spicy, raspberry, and blackberry flavors.

Scientific research has recently shown that Zinfandel is of Croatian origin but as Zinfandel migrated to California during the 19th Century Gold Rush it took hold as the favored wine grape of pioneer winegrowers who loved its flavorfulness, its healthy production, and ability to adapt to the diverse regions of California.

In Napa Valley it was Captain Joseph Osborne in the 1860’s who is credited with the first planting of Zinfandel in what is today known as the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley.

By organizing, the wineries seek to educate consumers about the rich history of Zinfandel in Napa Valley and guide wine adventurers to their cult-following small production wines that can be impossible to find in stores. And because the wineries are family-owned and off the beaten path, the Napa Zinfandel Trail group says it is for those wine explorers seeking to discover the less traveled roads and interact with the winemakers in their less commercial and more rural and intimate surroundings.

The Napa Zinfandel Trail association of wineries includes: Hendry Winery, Robert Biale Vineyards, Elyse Winery, Titus Vineyards, Chase Cellars, Tres Sabores, and The Terraces and more information, maps, and appointments can be obtained by calling the wineries directly and through the association’s website.

RUTHERFORD CHILDREN’S CHORUS ANNOUNCES FIRST SEASON, SPRING 2010

RUTHERFORD, CA: Shauna Mackenzie, an active member of the Rutherford Grange, will begin the Rutherford Children’s Chorus with auditions on January 19, 2010 at 4pm at the Rutherford Grange. The Chorus will consist of children from all over the Napa Valley ages 8-18, with treble voices. Rehearsals will begin the following Tuesday the 26th at 4pm at the Rutherford Grange. The first performance will be in May 2010 at the Rutherford Grange.

This chorus is a life-long dream of Mrs. Mackenzie who comes from a background of music, including a B.A. in Vocal Performance, several years of piano teaching and teaching music to children at the Boys & Girls Club of Monterey. She also spent ten years in the highly regarded Southern California Children’s Chorus which included a performance and recording with Yo Yo Ma, a concert at the White House and a performance in Carnegie Hall. Mrs. Mackenzie holds the highest expectations for the Rutherford Children’s Chorus and is confident there is plenty of talent across the valley to support a World-Class Chorus. She brings with her an enthusiasm for children, music and a belief that music is the most universal form of communication, bridging the gaps between cultural divides by bringing children together to share their common passion for music. Her goals include public and private performances, tours, choral competitions and special projects. Students in her Chorus can expect to grow not only musically but also grow in life skills such as community, integrity, dedication, discipline and responsibility.

The Choral repertoire will vary from traditional to folk to spiritual to contemporary. Some will be a cappella and some will be in foreign languages.

Tuition is $60/semester per child which includes music and the basic materials required. At this point in time we will not be providing uniforms but do require a standard black and white concert attire, for performances only.

The Chorus falls under the umbrella of the Rutherford Grange, a historical building and organization in Rutherford currently being restored that has played a central role in Napa Valley for 94 years. The Grange is currently active planning events, growing membership and bringing the community together through breakfasts, lectures, events and more.
